Childhood obesity is a growing problem throughout America and is even more of an issue for racial and ethnic minority populations. According to recent studies, nearly 40% of African-American girls and 37% of Mexican-American girls and nearly 42% of Mexican-American boys and 33% of African-American boys are overweight or obese.
Progress in the fight against obesity is not unlike losing weight. There is no miracle pill. Noticeable change comes slowly; it can be two steps forward and one step back. But with support from those around you, patience, and a healthy approach that attacks the problem from all angles (diet AND exercise; school food AND neighborhood conditions), we can prevail.
